Aptima, Inc., a trailblazer in leveraging artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to enhance mission readiness, has recently completed the first year in the SRFACE contract for the US Air Force.

SRFACE: Systematic Reconciliation Framework with Automated Classification Enrichment

For decades, the US Air Force (USAF) has amassed extensive data from flight simulator training events. These valuable datasets are stored in various forms, including simulator-created databases, manually-created Excel worksheets, and products from observer-based data collection devices. The resulting volumes of data can be securely archived and always available for use in central repositories called data lakes. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) maintains one such data lake that currently contains terabytes of data and is still growing. Although AFRL’s data are securely archived in this central repository, the potential for this data has largely been unrealized. Organizing, cleaning, and classifying these data manually is an impractical task, stalling progress in extracting valuable training insights.

SRFACE addresses these challenges by developing tools to automatically classify and organize data to provide training insights. This set of AI-enabled and logic-based tools streamlines data retrieval, enabling instructors, students, and researchers the ability to extract specific and relevant datasets for further analysis of trends, differences, and relationships. By integrating SRFACE into the existing tool suite of proficiency-based training applications, AFRL can unlock the full potential of their data lake.

Grounded in a comprehensive understanding of USAF pilot training data and applicable use cases, SRFACE is tailored to meet the specific needs of the USAF. By automating the classification and organization of pilot training data, the time and effort required for data management is significantly reduced, providing a foundation for future data-based training insights.

Beyond military applications, SRFACE holds potential for other domains that handle large volumes of training data, including industrial training programs, healthcare simulations, and educational technologies.

SRFACE is a member of Aptima’s Instructional Support Technologies (IST) that focuses on developing innovative methodologies and technologies for content development, delivery, and assessment for creating effective, engaging learning experiences.  As the Warfighting domain rapidly evolves, accelerating skill developing is critical. Technologies include improved methods for collecting data live in the moment, supporting after action review, and recommending future learning experiences. Aptima’s current efforts focus on fusing multi-source data, advanced analytics, and AI-supported insights of complex information to support the DoD’s instructors.
