Dr. Jared Freeman Named Corporate Fellow of Aptima, Inc.

Aptima, Inc., the leader in optimizing training and performance in the age of human-AI teams, announced today that Dr. Jared Freeman has been named a Corporate Fellow.

Research and development (R&D) companies such as Aptima appoint a small, select number of top scientists or engineers as Fellows to acknowledge their reputation as nationally or internationally recognized leaders in their fields. Dr. Freeman is only the third employee to be named a Fellow at Aptima since the company was founded in 1995.

Dr. Freeman joined Aptima in 1999 and has served as the company’s Chief Scientist since 2013. As Chief Scientist, he has been instrumental in the company’s growth and managed Aptima’s successful entry into the big data analytics market. He is now helping spearhead Aptima’s expansion into the area of human/AI teaming as the Principal Investigator overseeing Aptima’s role in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Artificial Social Intelligence for Successful Teams (ASIST) program. Under ASIST, DARPA is funding research to imbue AI with social intelligence, a basic building capability necessary to create expert human/AI teams in the future.

In addition to being actively involved in the company’s R&D contracts, as Chief Scientist Dr. Freeman manages the direction and quality of R&D at Aptima. He has extensive experience investigating problem solving by individuals and teams in real-world settings and has served as a Principle Investigator on a range of projects that include the development of decision aids, training content and systems, measures of human performance and communications, feedback technologies, and computational models of military organizations.

Dr. Freeman served as the 2017-2019 Industry Chair for the National Defense Industry Association’s Human Systems Division (NDIA HSD). The Division promotes the exchange of technical information and discussions between government, industry and academia, and the expansion of research and development in areas related to the human as a system whose performance must be integrated into any military system of systems. Dr. Freeman was also the Industry Conference Chair for the first national NDIA HSD Conference in 2013 and which continues annual each year since. In addition, he was for several years a Contributing Editor to Human Factors, the journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

Prior to joining Aptima, Dr. Freeman was a Scientist at Cognitive Technologies, where he developed a highly automated method of assessing and training the tactical skills of Navy and Army officers. He previously consulted to Bell Labs, conducting research and training about the complex team process of debugging large software systems.

Dr. Freeman is the author of more than 145 articles, book chapters, and conference presentations concerning these and related topics. He holds a Ph.D. in Human Learning and Cognition from Columbia University and a M.A. in Educational Technology from Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a member of the Cognitive Science Society.
