Aptima Upgrades Corporate Website for ADA Compliance

Aptima, Inc., the leader in human-centered engineering, today announced that it has upgraded its corporate website to ensure accessibility to people with disabilities. Aptima worked with Annapolis Web Publishing (AWP) to modify the company’s website to follow the WCAG 2.0 AA standard compliance published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 covers a wide range of recommendations for making Web content more accessible to those with disabilities including blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning disabilities, cognitive limitations, limited movement, speech disabilities, and photosensitivity. Following these guidelines can also make web content more usable to users in general.

“Aptima is committed to ensuring that every visitor to our website can access the information,” said Debra McNeely, Aptima’s Director of Corporate Communications. “As a Government contractor working with the Department of Defense, we have a special obligation to provide internet accessibility to those who have served in the US armed forces who may require accommodations for disabilities resulting from their service.

Passed in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ensured public spaces were easily accessible to those with disabilities. However, applying those standards to the Internet has been a much more complex process. Federal, state and local government websites were required to make the shift by January 18, 2018, but the business world has been slower to adapt, likely due to a lack of federal law to enforce the process, the expense involved in making a website compliant, and the lack of resources by many smaller businesses.
